The most critical applications are early fall (September) and late fall (October–November), which fuel deep root growth and set your lawn up for a lush spring green-up. Most Minnesota lawns benefit from core aeration once per year, ideally in late summer or early fall (August–October) when cool-season grasses are actively growing. Heavily compacted or high-traffic lawns may benefit from twice-yearly treatment. Pair aeration with overseeding for best results — the open cores give seed excellent soil contact.

Cool-season grasses are the right choice for Minnesota's climate. Kentucky bluegrass produces a dense, dark-green lawn and handles cold winters well. Premium blends tailored to sun/shade conditions outperform single-variety seeding.

Prevention is far easier than control. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in spring before soil temperatures reach 55°F — typically late April to early May in the Twin Cities metro. Once crabgrass germinates, post-emergent options are available but less effective on mature plants. Long-term, a thick and healthy lawn is your best defense against all annual weeds.
